Have you ever had “Disco Fries”? Day 22

Ryan Smolkin, a business graduate from Wilfred Laurier University, started the first Smoke’s Poutinerie in Toronto, and now the franchise has over 10 locations in Ontario,  including Waterloo!  The store is open from 11am to 3am on Thursday and 11 am to 4am on Friday and Saturday.  They have over 20 different types of poutine including Nacho Grande, Bacon Cheeseburger and Curry Chicken poutine.

Here is some interesting facts about poutine  you probably didn’t know….

It is widely accepted that poutine’s origin comes from Quebec and was invented after a trucker asked Fernand LaChance to add cheese curds to his fries in Warwick, Quebec.

Every year there is the Smoke’s Poutine eating Championship.  Contestants will have to beat the 2010-11 champion, Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti who set a record eating 13 pounds of poutine in 10 minutes!

Poutine is Quebec slang for “a mess”

In 1970s New York and New Jersey, poutine was served as a late-night side dish at clubs. They called it “disco fries.”

The largest poutine in the world was made in Saguenay, Que., and weighed 654 kg—about as much as a large horse.

Considered the most expensive poutine in Montreal, the poutine au foie gras is available for $23 at Au Pied de Cochon

Want to live in a Whisky Distillery? Day 17

Seagram Lofts  Waterloo, Ontario

Seagram lofts are located at 3 & 5 Father David Bauer Drive, Waterloo Ontario, right in the core of uptown Waterloo.  The lofts used to warehouse whiskey barrels for the well known Seagram Company LTD.

These buildings are a work of art as they managed to create amazing modern lofts all the while preserving the site’s heritage.  With my background in construction engineering and love of architecture, it is projects like this that fascinate me.
