An Awesome Complex! Day 23

The Wilmot Recreation Complex located right off the 7/8 highway at 1291 Nafziger Road, Baden Ontario.  This place has something for everyone at any age!  The large community centre hosts special events such as a wedding, lecture, or conference and invite up to 180 people!  Twin NHL sized ice surfaces, home of the New Hamburg Firebirds, offer lots of ice time including roller skating and ball hockey in the summer on the one arena.

The new phase 2 addition was completed January this year and is an amazing facility including a state-of –the –art aquatic centre for swimming with an eight lane, 25 metre competitive training pool, a warm water leisure pool, a dry land training centre, a 3 lane indoor walking/running track, an active seniors centre,  and a youth centre!  I’m sure Michael Phelps would approve.

This is an awesome complex and has so much going on everyday of the week for every age.

The staff is extremely friendly so give them a call at (519) 634-9225 or check out www.wilmot.ca/wrc/for  more information

Have you ever had “Disco Fries”? Day 22

Ryan Smolkin, a business graduate from Wilfred Laurier University, started the first Smoke’s Poutinerie in Toronto, and now the franchise has over 10 locations in Ontario,  including Waterloo!  The store is open from 11am to 3am on Thursday and 11 am to 4am on Friday and Saturday.  They have over 20 different types of poutine including Nacho Grande, Bacon Cheeseburger and Curry Chicken poutine.

Here is some interesting facts about poutine  you probably didn’t know….

It is widely accepted that poutine’s origin comes from Quebec and was invented after a trucker asked Fernand LaChance to add cheese curds to his fries in Warwick, Quebec.

Every year there is the Smoke’s Poutine eating Championship.  Contestants will have to beat the 2010-11 champion, Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti who set a record eating 13 pounds of poutine in 10 minutes!

Poutine is Quebec slang for “a mess”

In 1970s New York and New Jersey, poutine was served as a late-night side dish at clubs. They called it “disco fries.”

The largest poutine in the world was made in Saguenay, Que., and weighed 654 kg—about as much as a large horse.

Considered the most expensive poutine in Montreal, the poutine au foie gras is available for $23 at Au Pied de Cochon

Dogtopia! Day 18

Nice day for a doggy swim!

Beaver working hard!

Snyder’s Flats Bloomingdale, Ontario

The Snyder’s flats are located off Sawmill Road in Bloomingdale, Ontario Canada.  This used to be a gravel quarry and was converted into a conservation area.

It will take you 10 – 15 minutes to get here from Kitchener or Waterloo.  If you drive down the bumpy gravel road past the Mennonite Church in your right, you will see some parking at the dead end.  There is a 4.5 Km trails looping around taking you back to the start.  It is a well groomed trail that is fit for little ones and strollers and takes about an hour to walk.  Take your dog and he will love you for it! It’s doggy heaven if you have a furry swimmer in the family!

Our dog Tucker thinks this is DOGTOPIA!

Very Peaceful walk that only takes an hour from start to finish

Easiest way to Travel! Day 12

Waterloo Regional International Airport

Today I visited our own International airport in Breslau Ontario.  This “little” airport is booming and continues to expand its flights… you can even fly to Punta Cana!

I think it is great when you can get off the flight, quickly grab your luggage and head straight to your car without having to wait for a shuttle to take you to your parking lot.  At this point, all you want to do is get home!  And if you live in Waterloo Region, that shouldn’t take you very long at all.

A Peaceful place to Unwind. Day 11

Crown Lands Petersburg, Ontario

After your Thanksgiving feast this weekend, consider this as an option for the whole family.  Just off the 7/8 highway, take the Petersburg Notre Dame Drive exit.  Turn south and immediately on your left you will find Crown Lands with a number of different walking trails.   Only 10 minutes from Kitchener or New Hamburg, its great alternative to the couch after having that extra piece of pumpkin pie.
